Flat Foot Repair

Flat feet are a chronic condition that can be managed through various treatments, including:

  • Lifestyle changes: Avoid activities that put a strain on your feet, and try low-impact options like walking or swimming. Losing weight can also reduce stress on your feet.

  • Supportive devices: Choose shoes with good arch support and ample toe space. You can also try heel cups or custom orthotics for added heel elevation and cushioning.

  • Pain medication: Use over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, for pain relief.

  • Physical therapy: A physical therapist can help strengthen muscles and tendons to improve gait and foot function.

  • Stretching exercises:

    • Calf stretch: Stand facing a wall, step back with one foot, and bend your front knee while keeping the back leg straight.
    • Towel scrunch: Sit on the floor, loop a towel around the ball of your foot, and gently pull it toward you.
    • Tennis ball maneuver: Place a tennis ball between your ankles, squeeze inward, and gradually lift onto your tiptoes.
  • Heel raises: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and toes facing forward. Slowly rise onto your toes, then lower back down.

Most people with flat feet have no symptoms and do not need treatment. Flat feet are also common in children, with most developing an arch by around age six.
