Bunions
Here are several ways to care for bunions:
Shoes: Choose shoes that are wide, flat, and have a low heel and soft sole. You can also use a stretching device to widen shoes you already own.
Pads: Use over-the-counter bunion pads to cushion the area around the bunion.
Splints: Wear a toe spacer or toe support at night to keep your big toe in a normal position.
Pain relievers: Take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium to reduce pain and swelling. Topical NSAIDs (creams or ointments) can also be applied to the skin.
Ice: Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel to the bunion for up to 5 minutes at a time.
Orthotics: Use shoe inserts or custom orthotics to evenly distribute pressure and keep your toes and foot aligned.
Physical therapy: Perform exercises to strengthen and stretch the muscles in your feet.
Soaking: Soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salt a few times a week to help relieve pain and inflammation.
Surgery is the only way to fully correct a bunion. Discuss your goals, risk factors, and lifestyle factors with your doctor before deciding on surgery.
