Ankle Fracture

Ankle fracture care includes:

  • Rest: Avoid putting weight on your ankle and stay off it as much as possible to aid healing.

  • Ice: Apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel for 15–20 minutes every 2–4 hours to reduce swelling and inflammation.

  • Elevate: Keep your ankle elevated above heart level to minimize inflammation.

  • Compress: Wrap your ankle loosely with a soft bandage for support.

  • Take medication: Use acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) for pain and inflammation. Check with your doctor before taking these medications if you have specific health conditions.

  • See a doctor: Regular X-rays by your doctor will monitor the healing process to ensure proper bone alignment.

  • Wear a cast or boot: A cast or special boot can keep your ankle immobilized to promote healing.

  • Consider surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to reposition the bones or perform bone grafting. After surgery, you'll typically need to stay off your ankle for several weeks.
